Warner cable processes hundreds of cable boxes and digital modems
each day. Each serial numbered device must be tracked from
purchase through installation at a subscriber's home and then
back to the warehouse.
Time Warner had a batch based data collection system that required each
warehouse operator to upload the scanned data to the AS/400 for
processing. If an error was encountered, the operator had to
return to the pallets that were scanned and locate the specific
unit in error.
Corner Office Consulting designed and implemented a Symbol Technologies
RF based data collection system to completely replace the batch
process.
The AS/400 automatically downloads the serial database to a PC in the
warehouse on a scheduled basis. Hand-held RF portable data
terminals are used to scan devices. Each serial number is
immediately validated against the database. Each batch of
transactions is then automatically uploaded to the AS/400 for
updating.
